During the Reformation, Psalm 23 became personalized and was connected with Jesus Christ. The psalm’s movements through the three scenes of a pasture, a banqueting table, and the Lord’s house invite us to trust Yahweh God’s provision and protection.

    Peter, in his letter, encourages believers that suffering arising from Christian witness, be it in the home or marketplace, is the very crucible for the formation of Christ in the believer.  Specifically, when we bring God’s blessing to those who abuse the witness.

    Listening to 1 Peter through the lens of a first century reader reveals a message of empowerment, transformation, and affirmation for women and slaves. All Christians, regardless of social status, are called to follow Jesus’ footsteps which is a call to discipleship. To follow Jesus’ footsteps means to suffer for doing good, to trust God, to live in righteousness, and to be healed.

    Peter uses an early Christian Hymn to those to whom he writes concerning their identity in Christ.  Their outward experience is as refugees.  However, in Christ they have a unique calling and identity.  In chapter two Peter paints a portrait of the new Temple of God wherein people both worship and meet the living God.  The Temple is Christ and his people and his people are priests, both to God and to people.
