Peter, in his letter, encourages believers that suffering arising from Christian witness, be it in the home or marketplace, is the very crucible for the formation of Christ in the believer.  Specifically, when we bring God’s blessing to those who abuse the witness.

Listening to 1 Peter through the lens of a first century reader reveals a message of empowerment, transformation, and affirmation for women and slaves. Jesus concludes his sermon with a call to obedience, one of the most difficult human tasks.  However, by embracing the beginning of his sermon, with its blessings as the people of God and being the salt of the earth and the light of the world, it is a joy to face the judgment of God with confidence in Christ.

Jesus, the final judge, the Son of God the Father, and the Lord, calls us to do. In his final few words in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches us that to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven requires that we do the will of the Father - that we do all that Jesus has taught us. This impossible call to action can only be attained through faith; through the Beatitudes. Jesus ultimately asks of us, what will you do?
